Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja at Trimbakeshwar — everything to know before you go
Why Trimbakeshwar is the place for Kaal Sarp shanti
Trimbakeshwar, about 28 km from Nashik at the foot of Brahmagiri, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the only one where Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are worshipped in a single linga. The Godavari rises here at Kushavarta. Because Rahu and Ketu are pacified through the worship of Lord Shiva and the Naga devtas, and because the shanti is done beside a Jyotirlinga with the waters of the Godavari, families from across India and abroad come to Trimbakeshwar for Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran, Narayan Nagbali and Pitra Dosh rituals. The puja is also known as Kalsarpa Yoga Shanti, Kalsarp Yog Shanti or Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Puja — all names for the same ritual.
Step 1 — confirm the dosh in your Kundali
Not every difficulty is Kaal Sarp Dosh. The yog forms only when all seven planets fall between Rahu and Ketu; if one planet is outside, it is at most a partial (Anshik) yog. Pandit Rakesh Shukla Guruji reads your Kundali free of charge from your date, time and place of birth, tells you which of the 12 types of Kaal Sarp Yog it is, and only then advises whether the puja is needed. Not sure what to look for? See the signs of Kaal Sarp Dosh.
Step 2 — choose the muhurat
The puja is more effective on an auspicious date. Amavasya, Nag Panchami and Mahashivratri are traditionally the strongest days, but the puja is performed on many days of the year. Guruji fixes the muhurat from the panchang and your chart. See the coming Amavasya dates.
Before the puja — rules to follow
- Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol and tobacco from the day before until the puja is complete.
- Arrive in Trimbak the evening before if you can; the puja begins early in the morning.
- Bring new clothes: a white dhoti and upper cloth for men, a saree for women. Avoid black.
- Married couples traditionally sit together for the puja.
- You do not need to buy samagri — Guruji arranges everything.

On the day — what happens, in order
The family bathes at Kushavarta Kund and takes darshan. Guruji then begins with the sankalp in your name and gotra, followed by Ganesh pujan, Kalash sthapana, the Rahu–Ketu and Navagraha shanti, worship of the silver naag pratima, the Kaal Sarp shanti mantras, havan and the final aarti. The naag pratima is immersed at the end. The whole ritual usually takes three to four hours; Guruji explains each step as it happens.
After the puja — what to keep doing
Many devotees feel lighter and calmer soon after the puja; for others the change comes gradually. Guruji usually advises simple observances: chanting Om Namah Shivaya or the Maha Mrityunjay mantra, Rudrabhishek on Mondays, and respect for ancestors. Never harm a snake. See all Kaal Sarp remedies.
How to choose the right pandit at Trimbakeshwar
Many people at Trimbakeshwar call themselves pandits. Speak to the pandit directly, ask him to explain the vidhi, ask about the dakshina clearly before the day, and be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed results or asks for large sums in advance. A genuine purohit is straightforward and never creates confusion. Pandit Rakesh Shukla Guruji has performed these pujas at Trimbakeshwar for more than 20 years — read about Guruji.
